Kavala Guide

Your first day in Kavala

A relaxed introduction to the harbour, Panagia old town, the fortress and the city’s evening rhythm.

Begin at the waterfront, where the working port and the city promenade make Kavala easy to understand. The city rises amphitheatrically from the Aegean, so even a short walk reveals changing views of the harbour, castle and old town.

Continue towards Agios Nikolaos and the Kamares aqueduct before climbing into Panagia. The old town rewards an unhurried pace: stone lanes, traditional houses, the Imaret exterior, the house of Mohammed Ali and the lighthouse all sit within a compact peninsula.

The fortress gives the clearest overview of Kavala’s geography. From above, you can see why the city has always been connected to sea routes and to the road east and west. Return downhill for coffee or a late lunch near the centre.

Keep the evening simple. Walk the coastal zone as the light changes, then choose a meze table or seafood taverna. This route is intentionally light; it leaves space to notice everyday Kavala rather than treating the city as a checklist.
